Intermediate Grammar Lessons

  • Teaching the verb tense system - This section explains the verb tense/aspect system using an easy-to-understand method that typically has my students correctly using all 12 tenses in a written discourse with only about 2 weeks of lessons and practices.


  • Teaching modals - This section introduces simple and continuous modals in both the present and past forms as well as focuses on meanings, usage, and special issues found with them. Each section includes a set of lesson plans and practices.


  • Teaching gerunds and infinitives - Gerunds and infinitives are used everywhere in English and this section explains how to they are used as subjects, subject complements, and objects [direct and preposition]. This section also contains a set of day-by-day lesson plans complete with ideas for practices and downloadable handouts.


  • Teaching Adjective Clauses - This section contains a comprehensive explanation for teaching adjective clauses. It begins with an overview of the four basic types of adjective clauses and divides them into two groups. Next, step-by-step explanations for how to reduce and front each type of clause are presented along with sections detailing common issues students encounter.


  • Teaching adverb clauses - This section builds on the lesson What is a clause? with a focus on explaining the structure of an adverb clause sentence as well as meanings, usage, and special issues found with the most commonly used adverb clause subordinators. It also includes a discussion on the differences between adverb clause subordinators and their preposition counterparts. This section concludes with a set of lesson plans and practices.


  • Teaching conditionals - This section builds on the lesson What is a clause? with a focus on explaining the structure of the four main types of conditional sentences as well as meanings, usage, and special issues found with them. Each section concludes with a set of lesson plans for practices.
