Practicing /S/ /Z/ & /EZ/ Word Endings

Minimal Pairs Practice

One way to practice pronouncing /s/ and /z/ endings with minimal pairs is through the use of funny sentences containing some of the common pairs.

For example:
  1. Pop stops and robs clubs.

  2. Bob writes and reads books about dogs.

  3. Pat laughs and loves Bob's books.

Sentences like these can practiced in a pairwork format with the teacher walking around monitoring and giving corrections when needed.

Practice With Pictures

Pictures of nouns and verbs are another easy-to-make practice for s endings. Either individually or with a partner, ask students to identify whether the items in each picture take an /s/, /z/, or /ez/ sound.
